The Legend of Brasov

No region can do without their myths and legends. The city of Kronstadt do their legend of the origin of the city. It begins sometime in the 1063rd then reigned King Andrew and his son Solomon of Hungary, which fought against the Cumans, wild horsemen from the steppes of the Black Sea.

The king's son lost a battle fled into the Carpathian with his followers. The followers urged him to avoid being identified, removing his royal crown. So he put it on a fallen tree trunk, where it was found centuries later by a Saxon peasant. Here the Saxons built after the town hall tower of Kronstadt and as the emblem was selected the crown on the tree.

The Legend says that the king's son rode until a canyon with 4 large rocks. Today, the rock called of the name of King’s son (Solomon rocks) and is a popular destination for hikers. History of the town Brasov

In the years 1211 to 1225 Brasov was founded by the Teutonic Knights. In 1235 Crown / Corona / Kronstadt was first documented. The name Barasu (1252) / Brasu (1271) come to Brasov. The name Brasso / Brassow / Brass / Brasov come from the Old Slavic and meaning "clear water" or "creek".

In the 13th and 14 Century boomed Brasov and 1375 build up all of today's city center with its four neighborhoods in Corpus Christi, the Portico, Catherinae and Petri. One of the advantages of Brasov was the strategic location of the nearby Carpathian passes where crossed the trade routes between Transylvania, Moldavia and Wallachia. In 1335 Brasov was awarded city rights by King Charles Robert. These were extended by Ludwig I and Sigismund of Luxembourg. In the years 1241, 1278, 1285, 1345 Kronstadt suffered from the Tartars, but could expand more and more. By 1400 there were in the city over 30 guilds.

In 1392 Kronstadt Blumenau was created as a new district with its Orthodox St. Nicholas Church (1594).

From 1383 after 100 years construction, the St. Mary's Church was built. This burned down in 1689 and has since "Black Church" because the walls turned black. Today it is one of the largest Protestant churches in Europe southeast. The church has over 5 portals. The oldest is located on the west side. A fresco dating from 1477 and showing King Matthias Corvinus and his wife Beatrice of Aragon. The church is famous for its important collection of carpet, of which most copies from the 17th Century come.

The oldest church of Brasov is the Church of St. Bartholomeus or in Romanian "Biserica evangelica Sf. Bartolomeau". The construction began 1260. Eye-catching are elements of the Gothic style windows and portal frames and the remains of the mural in one of the side chapels.

1448 ordered the Hungarian King Sigismund of Luxembourg in the construction of fortifications. Until 1453, the castle was demolished on the battlements and with the material began the construction of the walls with gates and bastions. 1553 began the construction of the castle on Castle Hill. In the same year Brasov had 4,000 victims.

The 16th Century was marked by wars and destruction. In May 1688 the Saxons revolted against Habsburg rule. The uprising was crushed by the Austrian government and Brasov was occupied by imperial troops.

On 21 April 1689 comes to a big fire which destroyed large parts of Brasov. In 1835 was founded in Brasov the first bank in the Romania country. In 1854 open the telegraph office and in 1873 and 1879 it came to the railway connection between Vienna and Bucharest.

In the industrial boom growth the city, with the influx of workers. Brasov was occupied 1916 by Romanian troops. In 1918, after centuries as a part of the Kingdom Hungary, Brasov became Romanian. Now began the city continued to grow due to the influx of Romanian citizen. 1940 till 1944 Kronstadt became the seat of the German minority. In spring 1944 Kronstadt became a target of American air raids. In September 1944, the Red Army marched into the city and in January 1945 the deportation of young Saxons began to the USSR.

Between 1950 and 1959, Brasov was called Stalingrad. 1987 began riots as one of the first cities of Romania. Many people were arrested or disappeared without trace. Two years later, in 1989, came the collapse of the communist state. Especially the German and Hungarian minorities did emigrate to the time use of the POSSIBILITY and moved to Germany.
